Sanya Restaurant: Nakamura Kanemon IV as Yaoya Hanbei, 1852 - Handsome portrait of Nakamura Kanemon IV as Yaoya Hanbei in the kabuki play "Shinju Yoi-goshin." He scowls unhappily as he looks up over his shoulder, his plaid outer robe slipping from his shoulders. He wears a blue and gray striped kimono over a red under robe, his hair tied back in a slender topknot. The Sanya Restaurant is shown behind him, with the upper stories rising above the trees in the fenced courtyard along the water. Red paper lanterns hang from the eaves, and boats move up and down the water. The title cartouche is framed with an interesting assortment of vegetables. A nicely detailed design with soft shading on the water and sky.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 5/8"
