Seki Sanjuro III as the Artisan Class and Nakamura Utaemon IV as the Farming Class from the Dance of the Four Social Classes, 1849

Comments - Interesting kabuki print featuring Seki Sanjuro III representing the artisan class at lower right and Nakamura Utaemon IV representing the farming class. In feudal Japan, there were four classes: samurai (the ruling class), farmers, artisans, and merchants. Here, the artisan rests on one knee, holding his finger to his chin with a questioning expression as he tilts his head. His companion scowls down at him, holding a hoe over his shoulder, a small black cap tied over his blue head scarf. Blossoming cherry branches frame the sky above. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, hole, repaired. A couple creases at edges. Please see photos for details.
