Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesans in the Yoshiwara, 1868

Comments - Lovely image of two courtesans strolling through the Yoshiwara at night. The beauty at left wears a black outer kimono patterned with floral medallions, while her companion has a blue violet obi decorated with crashing waves. Each wears black geta clogs with three "teeth" that identify her as an oiran or high-ranking courtesan. Cherry trees blossom behind a bamboo fence with lanterns at intervals. A lovely design.
