Comments - Interesting scene supposedly depicting the enthronement of the Emperor Jimmu around 660 BCE, the first emperor of Japan. During the Tokugawa era, the shogun prohibited the depiction of persons of high rank or current events. After the end of the Tokugawa shogun and the restoration of the Emperor in 1868, artists were still being careful not to portray actual events. The presence of foreigners in European dress at right give a clue that the subject is actually the enthronement of the Emperor Meiji. A nicely detailed design.
