Series; An Imagined Performance of the Storehouse of Loyal Retainers (Mitate Chushingura)

The 47 Ronin, Act 10: The Amakawaya Shop, 1822 - 1825 - Handsome early Kunisada kabuki scene of an imagined performance (mitate) of "Kanadehon Chushingura," the classic drama about the 47 ronin. In Act 10, the merchant Gihei has agreed to store weapons for the vendetta at his Amakawaya shop. Here, he looks up with an angry frown at his wife Osono, who stares down with a crazed expression, grasping a black cloth in one hand. Gihei holds a pipe in one hand, a tobacco pouch open on his knee. From left, the actors are Iwai Hanshiro and Ichikawa Danjuro. Nice expressive figures from a rarely seen Kunisada series.
