The Benefits of Waka, Komachi Praying for Rain, 1896

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of Nakamura Fukusuke IV as the poet Ono Komachi praying for rain. During a severe drought affecting all of Japan, the emperor asked her to pray for rain. She recites a waka poem from the slip atop a fan in her hands, her robes flying about her wildly as an attendant shelters her with an umbrella. Jagged bolts of lightning streak across the darkening sky as rain begins to fall. A bold, dramatic image, beautifully color and shaded. The first time we've seen this striking design.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown
