Soga Juro Sukenari Prepares to Take Revenge on Kudo Suketsune, 1843 - 1846

Comments - Interesting scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers, whose father was killed by the nobleman Kudo Suketsune when they were children. The brothers vowed to avenge his death when they became samurai. In the center, the older brother Soga Juro Sukenari performs a dance at a New Year's party given by Suketsune, where he will announce his intention for revenge. The nobleman sits on a bearskin at upper left, sipping from a large cup of sake. At lower right, a beauty accompanies Juro on a hand drum, a sake server on the floor before her near Juro's gloves, sword, and riding crop. A handsome design with expressive figures, nicely composed.
