Iwafuji Berating Onoe, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting scene from a play in which Iwafuji, a senior lady-in waiting, plots the downfall of Onoe, a junior lady-in-waiting, by substituting a zori sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. When the sandal is discovered, Iwafuji publicly beats and humiliates Onoe, who decides to commit suicide because of the shame. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after "discovering" the sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal threateningly over her head, glaring at the meek Onoe, who looks to the side with a worried expression as she tugs on the sleeve of her kimono. Panels running across the back of the room are decorated with pine trees and clouds. A handsome illustration from this popular drama.
