Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Tenmangu Wakaba no Goaijju, 1846

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play from "Tenmangu Wakaba no Goaijju" at the Kawarazaki Theater featuring Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as as the samurai Toneri Sakuramaru and Ichikawa Shinsha I as his wife, Yae. He looks down at her with a sullen frown, one hand gripping the hilt of his sword, the tip of the weapon resting on the floor. A few loose hairs framing his face give him a rather disheveled appearance. The beauty smiles back at him happily as she kneels on the floor, patting the side of her head. She wears a gray outer robe with cherry blossoms and streams over a kimono with colorful tie-dyed bands. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14" x 18 7/8"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Two separate panels. Small loss and thinning at edges, a few wormholes, repaired. A few creases. Please see photos for details.
