Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Umeomaru, one of samurai triplets, fighting with a boatman in a scene from the play "Sugawara Denju Tenerai Kagami." He grips an oar with one hand as he grabs the boatman by the back of his neck, forcing him down towards the ground. The sleeves of his plaid outer robe are pushed down to the waist to reveal a red kimono patterned with his namesake plum (ume) blossoms. Swirling clouds fill the background beneath a softly shaded sky. Nice expressive figures.
