Series; From the Gallery: Sixteen Views of Mount Fuji
Sculptor Hidari Jingoro, 1876 - Handsome design from a rarely seen Kunichika series depicting figures in front of views of Mt. Fuji. The famed sculptor Hidari Jingoro sits on the floor admiring the large wooden sculpture of a beautiful young courtesan that he has just finished. According to legend, the skilled carpenter once carved a beautiful woman from wood that was so lifelike that it began to move when he admired it while drinking sake. He carefully studies the beauty, a sober expression on his face as he balances a tiny cup of sake in his hand atop his knee. His tools are laid out on a mat beside him, the floor covered with wood shavings. A round window and pine trees frame a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji. A great design from this unusual Kunichika series.
