Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Takagi Oriemon Budo, 1848

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait from the play "Takagi Oriemon Budo Jitsuroku" at the Nakamura Theater featuring Iwai Kumesaburo III as the samurai Innami Kazuma and Nakamura Utaemon IV as the yakko or footman Sodesuke, who is actually Otaka Tonomo in disguise. The young man smiles as he looks over his shoulder, wearing a geometric print kamishimo over a tan kimono and red under robe, his thick hair tied back into an unusually large topknot. Sodesuke frowns angrily as he hunches forward, a bouquet of irises in one hand and the other resting atop the hilt of his sword. Nicely composed and detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft shading in the sky.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, small loss at edge, repaired. Creasing, a few faint stains. Please see photos for details.
