Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Kiichi Hogen, 1867

Comments - Interesting depiction of the "Chrysanthemum Garden" scene from the play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen." The retired warrior Kiichi Hogen fought for the Heike, but his family had alliances to the Genji. Having written three books on battle strategy, he was unsure who deserved to receive them, as members of both clans are interested in obtaining his secrets. The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) of the Genji clan, has joined his household in disguise as the servant Torazo to obtain the books. Torazo kneels in the center, frowning angrily as he looks up at the elderly warrior. Hogen grimaces at him with rage, raising a stick above his head as if to strike the young man. Torazo's fellow yakko or footman stands at left, a worried expression on his face as he scratches his head. Colorful chrysanthemum blossoms are protected by checked roofs and a low bamboo garden fence. Nice expressive figures in an attractive setting. Includes embossing on the elder's white hair and beard.
