Comments - Intriguing scene of Ichikawa Danjuro as the samurai Kinoshita Tokichiro (the young Toyotomi Hideyoshi) and Iwai Matsunosuke as his wife Okiku outside an old mountain shrine in the play "Tanehisago Shinsho Taiheki." He angrily tosses a handful of clumps of earth at her, his hand raised high over his head. He frowns unhappily at Okiku, who looks back at him with a patient smile. He wears a plain turquoise robe tucked into deep blue hakama pants, his swords at his side and his thick hair pulled back into a topknot tied with white cord. His wife is dressed in a blue kimono patterned with pine branches and tied with a black obi, her hair pulled back into a simple knot. The trunks of tall pine trees frame the rustic, thatched-roof temple, with the distant hillside silhouetted in gray. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.
