Genji Returns to the Eight Bridges, 1860

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji and beauties visiting an iris garden on a summer day. The "Eight Bridges" (Yatsuhashi) of the title refers to a Japanese bridge design consisting of eight segments, assembled in a zig-zag or stepped arrangement and first referenced in the Heian era. The young nobleman stands in the center, smiling over his shoulder at the woman on the shore at left, a fan decorated with Genji symbols in his hand. A few carp bob to the surface of the water at bottom center, and purple, white, and blue irises line the wooden walkway. An attractive scene.
