Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Prince Genji Playing the Koto

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting Prince Genji entertaining his guests by playing the koto. He smiles at his companions as he sits behind the instrument at left, wearing a softly shaded kimono with a design of swallows in flight. A beauty kneeling on the edge of the porch returns his smile, while a matron beside her carries a large paper lantern decorated with a scene of a courtier playing koto for a beauty, perhaps a scene from the Tale of Genji. AT right, two young men converse in the garden, one gesturing at the plants blooming against a bamboo trellis. The room overlooks the water, with autumn grasses and flowers framing the view. A lovely scene with a wonderfully detailed setting and fine bokashi shading in the night sky.

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 29 5/8"
