The Heike Meeting to Prepare for War, 1859

Comments - Terrific depiction of members of the Heike (Taira) clan assembling in a palace to discuss preparations for war. Wearing voluminous formal court robes and tall black caps, the samurai are seated around the various rooms, waiting patiently. The daimyo sits on a platform in another room at top center, with retainers bowing before him next to a tray on the floor. At lower left, two pairs of warriors bow to each other in formal greeting. Each samurai is carefully identified with a name cartouche. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces and elegant interior setting, with beautiful sliding screens depicting a peacock and a heron on a snow-covered willow tree. A nicely detailed design.
