Comments - Attractive portrait of the courtesan Takao combing her hair as she looks into a mirror atop a small black lacquer chest patterned with maple leaves. Her kimono also features maple leaves, worn over a red under robe tied with a print obi. Another kimono decorated with tie-dyed maple leaves and flowing water hangs over a lacquer stand at upper right. The verse by the famous scholar and poet Sugawara no Michizane reads:
At the present time,
Since I could bring no offering,
See Mount Tamuke!
Here are brocades of red leaves,
As a tribute to the gods.
An attractive design, nicely detailed.
