Original Toshitsune (1859 - 1907) Japanese Woodblock Print
Wounded Soldiers Sharing a Cup

Series; Brocade Pictures for Moral Education, 1883 - 1884

Brocade Pictures for Moral Education - Interesting design from a six-volume series of woodblock prints published between 1883 - 1884 illustrating moral teachings. These images were likely used for classroom instruction on moral education, called "shushin," a program promoted by the Japanese government in reaction to the perceived lapse in public morals, attributed to poor Western influences. A number of different artists contributed to the series, such as Toshikata, Toshimitsu, and Toshimine, many of them students of the great master Yoshitoshi. These prints feature realistically drawn scenes from ancient to modern times, exemplifying the highest standards of behavior. These intriguing images include Japanese in both traditional and Western-style dress and a variety of foreigners. Some designs even use animals to represent human characteristics. A fascinating series, rarely seen.
