Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Bound Captive, 1879

Comments - Dramatic scene of a bound prisoner at a palace, a heavy rope tightly coiled around his torso. He frowns as he looks up at the beauty at right, the loose wisps of hair around his face giving him a disheveled appearance. The woman grins back at him happily, while the nobleman below grimaces angrily. The samurai at left grits his teeth as he looks on, one hand gripping the hilt of his sword. Purple draperies featuring a paulownia crest hang above, the panels of the room beyond decorated with pine trees against a red sky and blue clouds. An interesting subject, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black court caps.
