Scene from Matsu Harete Iro no Narikage, 1862

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Matsu Harete Iro no Narikage" at the Nakamura Theater featuring from left, Sawamura Tossho II as the carpenter Sumimage no Chosaku and Bando Hikosaburo V as Otonai Narikage. Narikage looks over his shoulder with a worried expression, holding his hands out at his sides. He wears a green kimono tucked into yellow pants detailed with embossed lines, a cord hung around his neck. Chosaku scratches his head in a puzzled manner, gripping a cloth in his other hand. A lumberyard lines the opposite shore of the river, with a bridge visible at left. Interesting expressive figures in an attractive setting.
