Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Flower Competition, 1864

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of kabuki actors on a wide stone stairway. In the center, several men and women appear to be engaged in a game of tug of war, grasping a long rope held by a fellow standing at the top of the steps. Some of the bystanders watch with interest, while others are busy with their own amusements. At left, a man grabs his companion by the leg, pulling him off balance. At right, a beauty sits demurely on the stairs, holding a pipe, while another man leads a companion by the hand up the stairs.. An unusual subject depicting actors offstage in their leisure hours, with text across the top. Nice detail in the expressive faces and clothing.
