Scene from Date zensei sakura no iromaku, 1849

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Date zensei sakura no iromaku" at the Nakamura Theater, one of many dramas based on the disputed succession of the Date clan. Three women are play fighting with blossoming cherry branches, the maid Matsugae in the center waving a branch in each hand. Her black kimono features irises, the sleeves tied back with a sash, ribbons and flowers adorning her hair. At right, the lady-in-waiting Yashio grimaces angrily, raising her branch above her head as she glares at Matsugae. AT left, the serving lady Utsuri has twists as a stick strike her on the shoulder, while the wet nurse Masaoka kneels behind her holding a box on a tray. Bamboo decorated the panels running across the back of the room. From left, the actors are Onoe Baiko IV, Sawamura Ujuro II, Iwai Kumesaburo III, and Sawamura Chojuro V. Nice expressive figures in an attractive setting.
