Mother about to Beat a Young Woman, 1873

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of an angry mother raising a stick above her head as she prepares to beat a young woman, her face contorted with rage. Bound by a rope around her shoulders, the beauty tilts her head with a woeful smile. At lower right, a younger sister recoils in fright, grabbing hold of the elderly woman's sleeve in an attempt to stop her. She wears a green kimono patterned with yellow flowers over a red floral under robe, her hair adorned with a red lacquer comb and ribbons. From left to right, the actors are Sawamura Tossho II, Onoe Baiko, and Seki Sanjuro III. Nice large expressive figures, detailed with soft shading on the night sky.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown
