Series; Stories of the Faithful Samurai, 1864
Stories of the Faithful Samurai - Terrific print from one of the last great series that Toyokuni III did before his death in 1864. These dynamic designs showcase actors in the roles of the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," which tells the tale of the 47 ronin. The brave warriors are shown during the night attack on Moronao's castle, wearing their trademark black and white dogtooth bordered robes. These bold half-length portraits feature the ronin in dramatic battle poses, clashing swords or wielding spears, fighting with intensity and passion to avenge their master's death. Nicely detailed with expressive faces and delicate cloth embossing in the white areas of the robe. A great image from this legendary tale of honor and revenge.
