Prince Genji and Beauties Admiring a Screen, 1860

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji and his companions admiring a large folding screen with a depiction of a ferry. In the center, a man attempts to leading a bucking horse onto the crowded boat. The passengers include a man in a lion dance costume and a young boy holding a scroll with a temple bell on it. Genji smiles happily as he views the scene, the beauties at right leaning forward eagerly. He wears a black coat patterned with herons in falling snow and holds an ornate pipe. At lower left, a woman in a peony print kimono gestures at the design. An intriguing design with wonderful detail.
