Comments - Terrific depiction of the 1183 Battle of Kurikaradani in which Kiso Yoshinaka killed the Taira leader Tomonori. The Minamoto Clan launched a surprise night attack against Taira forces at Kurikara Pass, facing the enemies on multiple fronts and driving them into the narrow pass. This terrific triptych effectively conveys the chaos of the attack, with Minamoto samurai closing in on the Taira in their encampment on horseback and on foot, spears flashing under a driving rain. In the center, two warriors attack a general in a horned battle helmet with spears, his tasseled command baton lying on the ground below. Expressive faces and nice detail in this dramatic scene.
