Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Shinzo Tsurifune Kidan" at the Ichimura Theater of two beauties along the waterfront. At left, the Edo geisha Danshichijima no Okaji grins malevolently as she watches her companion out of the corners of her eyes, grabbing hold of the back of the beauty's robe. At right, Issunjima no Otatsu, a geisha from Naniwa (Osaka), looks back over her shoulder with a suspicious expression, throwing one hand out at her side. Each wears a boldly patterned checked kimono and geta clogs. Pleasure boats can be seen on the river behind the pair, with red lanterns glowing in the teahouses lining the far shore. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I and Onoe Kikujiro II. Nice expressive figures, detailed with burnishing on the black obi.
