Snow in the Garden, 1859

Series; Genji by Collaborating Brushes

Snow in the Garden, 1859 - Fantastic collaborative triptych by Hiroshige II and Toyokuni III depicting Prince Genji and his companions enjoying a winter day in the garden. The young nobleman stands at right, smiling happily as he watches several beauties building a replica of Mt. Fuji out of snow. He wears an elegant coat patterned with fans over a blue kimono, and chunky wooden clogs. At left, several beauties use wooden shovels to toss clumps of snow onto the growing pile, another woman covering her mouth with her hands as she laughs with amusement. A beauty in a red kimono carries a black lacquer tray mounded with snow as she prepares to cross a plank bridge over the garden pond, where mandarin ducks swim about and the pink buds of plum trees frame the water. A lovely image, attractively colored and detailed, with light embossing on the white kimono collars and trim and soft bokashi shading in the water and sky.
