Scene from Sodegaura Ukina no Harusame, 1861

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Sodegaura Ukina no Harusame" at the Nakamura Theater featuring from Bando Hikosaburo V as the otokodate or street knight Hanaya Tokubei and Iwai Kumesaburo III as his wife, Ofusa. The beauty grins as she approaches her husband, a kettle in one hand and a broom over her shoulder. Tokubei frowns back at her angrily as he pats the side of his face with a blue cloth. A large woven trunk with a yoke atop it rests on the ground behind him. Blossoming plum trees frame the night sky above a low bamboo garden fence. A handsome design with an attractive night setting.

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 18 3/4"
