Kashiwagi, Chapter 36: Kasaya Sankatsu and Akane Hanshichi, 1864 - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Akane no Iroba," based on the true story of a lover's suicide. The young samurai Akane Hanshichi and the beautiful Kasaya Sankatsu decide to commit suicide rather than be parted. Here, he holds one of her kimono sleeves as she hands him a small bag on a cord, a sword clenched between his teeth. The setting is a hillside at night, the dark sky framed by a pine tree. A handsome design.
