Original Ide Gakusui (1899 - 1982) Japanese Woodblock Print
Morning Glories, 1949

Ide Gakusui - Gakusui studied Japanese-style painting, and lived in China during the 1930s. After World War II ended, he returned to Japan and began designing kacho-e (birds and flowers prints) for Watanabe in the late 1940s. His realistic works are beautifully rendered.

Comments - Lovely closeup of morning glories, the deep blue violet of the center blossom contrasting beautifully with the white flowers with pale green centers. The gray leaves and softly shaded background focus all attention on the flowers. An attractive design and a nice choice for display.

Publisher - Watanabe, with 7 mm seal within image at lower right, later edition from original blocks

Artist - Ide Gakusui (1899 - 1982)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top edge from previous mounting. A couple light creases at edges, a few small indented marks on background. Please see photos for details.
