Sankyoku Music at the Kinpeiro, 1870

Comments - Terrific depiction of a sankyoku or "three instrument" ensemble of courtesans at the modern Kinpeiro house. The beauty at left plays the kokyu, an instrument similar to the shamisen but played upright with a bow. Her companion in the center kneels beside a koto, while the courtesan at right performs on the shamisen. She wears a fantastic kimono patterned with a fierce tiger in a bamboo grove. The woman in the center's robe features mandarin ducks and chrysanthemums. Behind them, glass windows overlook a balcony with glass lanterns trimmed with tassels, and blossoming cherry trees beyond. A lovely detailed with wonderful detail. The first time we've seen this subject.
