Series; Annual Events for Young Murasaki
The Ninth Month, 1852 - Beautiful triptych depicting Prince Genji and his young son enjoying the autumn color in the ninth month. The nobleman relaxes on a bench at right, holding an ornate pipe and wearing a striking black coat featuring cranes in flight. In the center, the young boy gestures excitedly to the beauty at left, who holds a maple branch with things tied to it. At left, checked roofs shelter a chrysanthemum garden with colorful flowers, some blossoms supported by paper collars. A garden with a large pond fills the background, and the sliding panels of the mansion are open at right, allowing a view inside. A lovely design with a handsome setting and wonderful detail, including light embossing in the white kimono trim.
