Kawarazaki Gonjuro as Yazama Shigetaro, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro as the samurai Yazama Shigetaro sitting inside a house on a dark night. He looks over his shoulder with a frown as he holds his sword upright between his hands. A kettle hangs over a blazing fire in a floor hearth behind him, and the walls of the home are shabby with cracked and missing plaster. A paper lantern hangs at upper right and autumn grasses can be seen outside. An interesting design with a nicely detailed interior setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 7/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous mounting. Thinning at corner, a couple holes, repaired. Creasing. Please see photos for details.
