Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Benkei at Gojo Bridge and Palace Scene, 1890

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych divided diagonally to depict two different scenes. The image at left illustrates the famous duel on Gojo Bridge between the warrior monk Benkei and the young samurai Ushiwakamaru (the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune). The youth leaps high into the air with his sword in one hand, leaving Benkei to stare after him angrily, a full moon glowing in the sky above. At right, the palace scene from a play about the disputed Date clan succession shows the nursemaid Masaoka, who has been charged with protecting the young heir, who clings to her side. Her son pleads excitedly with the samurai in the center, who frowns unhappily. A handsome design with expressive figures and lively color. Includes burnishing on Benkei's robe and Masaoka's black kimono.
