Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the historical tale "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a story about the three warring kingdoms in China during the third century. This triptych illustrates the three leaders Kan'u, Gentoku, and Chohi meeting in the peach orchard to take an oath of brotherhood, swearing to serve each other and the state rather than continue fighting amongst themselves. In the center, the bearded warrior Gentoku holds a fan as he looks solemnly at Chohei on the left, a goblet in his outstretched hand as he looks up at him. At right, Kan'u strokes his beard thoughtfully, holding a fantastic glaive with a blade issuing from a dragon's mouth. A table in the center is laden with refreshments, and a blossoming peach tree fills the background. The actors include Ichikawa Sadanji I in the center and Nakamura Shikan at right. A fantastic image with lively color and striking, exotic costumes.
