Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Hitokanade Kodakara Soga" at the Nakamura Theater. At right, Ikoma Kojiro sits on a cushion leaning against an armrest, looking over his shoulder with a glum frown as he pulls up a chrysanthemum print kimono draped over his shoulder. The shoji panel beside him is torn and covered with graffiti, and the wall behind him has cracks in the plaster. At left, Jinpachi's wife Okiku smiles at the kamuro or child apprentice Namie as she holds out a letter in one hand. The girl stands in the doorway, wearing a robe decorated with irises. Behind Okiku, a teapot sits on the red coals of a hibachi, and a black lacquer tray on the floor holds dishes of food. From left, the actors are Sawamura Yujiro I, Ichikawa Dannosuke V, and Kataoka Gado II. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
