Comments - Terrific image of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and court ladies enjoying a view of Chishima from the Kanrantei Palace in Matushima, which originally belonged to the Date Clan. The emperor is shown at far right, seated at a table, wearing a military uniform. In the center, the empress stands on the verandah, holding a folding fan next to her head. Several ladies-in-waiting kneel beside her, while a few others lean against the railing at left. Beautiful islands dot the water beyond, each topped with pine trees, with mountains in the distance. Wonderful detail in the elegant palace setting, which includes a large vase filled with peonies and cherry blossoms, red lacquer railings, and purple drapery with the Meiji Imperial crest.
