Commoners in an Iris Garden, 1872

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych depicting five commoners in an iris garden. Their delicately cloth embossed kimono are boldly patterned with bamboo, pine branches, and plum, cherry, and peony blossoms, each tied with a violet and white print obi. Oversize irises in blue and purple fill the background among slender green leaves, the sky shaded from red to white to pale blue. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo, Onoe Kikugoro, Nakamura Shikan, Sawamura Tossho, and Kawarazaki Sansho. A striking design with expressive figures and fine line work in the hair.
