Bando Kamezo I as Itamiya Jubei and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Daiba no Nizo, 1857 - Interesting scene from a kabuki play about the former samurai Itamiya Jubei, who falls on hard times and ends up murdering a blind masseur for his money. Jubei first encounters the blind man at an inn, and pretends to befriend him after discovering a thief in the room they share. Here Jubei sits on the floor of the inn, holding out his tobacco pouch and pipe case as the proprietor glares at him angrily. A fish, small octopus, and bird hang on the wall at left, and a coals glow inn a floor brazier at lower right. The actors are Bando Kamezo I as Itamiya Jubei and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Daiba no Nizo. The inset above, by Gengyo Miyagi, includes a string of prayer beads and blue cloth curtains outside an inn. Great expressive figures in this handsome design.
