Prince Genji with Beauties at Higashiyama, 1868

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji and Beauties on an outing to view the cherry blossoms at Higashiyama or Mt. Higashi. The young nobleman stands at left, a somewhat alarmed expression on his face. He wears a striking black coat patterned with egrets flying in falling snow, an ornate pipe in one hand. At right, a beauty carries a cushion up the stone steps, her companion below holding a tobacco set. Flowering cherry trees dot the grassy slopes. A lovely spring design, detailed with burnishing on the black coat and faint embossing on the white under robes.
