Parrot Komachi, 1854 - Charming portrait of a beauty playing the shamisen from a series pairing women with seven famous episodes in the life of the famous ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi. This scene refers to an event in her later life, when the emperor sent her a poem of pity about her aging. She replied by sending the same poem back to him with only one word changed, thus "parroting" his words while still demonstrating her clever sense of wit. The beauty sits on a tatami mat with a red lacquer tray holding a fish and bowl of food nearby. Behind her stepping stones lead across a pond or lake to a waterfall flowing over a lush green hill. An attractive design, nicely detailed.
