Courtesan and Priest, 1884

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the courtesan Ogiya of the Sakuya and the priest Gokurakuji Seishin along an embankment, the beauty biting on the end of a towel as she looks up at her companion. The monk grimaces angrily as he returns her gaze, clutching an umbrella with both hands. His head is unshaven, the hair growing out. At left, a nobleman in a green coat watches him closely, as does a young samurai in a purple kimono. At right, a willow tree frames a view of the red sky above the undulating water. The actors include Suketakaya Kosuke IV as Ogiya and Onoe Kikugoro V as Gokurakuji Seishin. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair.
