Scene from Kaikei dengajaya-mura, 1854 - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Kaikei dengajaya-mura" at the Kawarazaki Theater of the young samurai Hayase Genjiro and two beauties in an interior. He looks down with a frown at the beauty Hazue as he pushes up one sleeve, his other hand resting atop the hilt of his sword. Hazue tilts her head coyly, patting the back of her hair. She wears a kimono shaded from plum to blue and decorated with chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms. Behind her, Somenoi leans forward with a grin, tucking one hand into her obi. Panels lining the back of the room feature a striking design of birds in flight above undulating waves. From left, the actors are Bando Takesaburo I, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, and Bando Shuka I. An attractive image, nicely detailed and colored.
