Beauty Playing with a Cat, 1893

Series; One Hundred Gardens

Beauty Playing with a Cat, 1893 - Charming portrait of a kneeling beauty, smiling happily as she dangles a cord in front of her cat, who eyes it curiously with one paw lifted. The folding screen behind her depicts a seascape with a narrow spit of land leading to an island and gulls overhead. Behind her at right, a blue vase holds an elegant floral arrangement with curving branches dotted with buds. At upper right, an alcove displays a scroll of the Seven Lucky Gods above a kagami mochi or mirror rice cake for the New Year. The kagami mochi is used as a holiday decoration, then broken open and eaten in a traditional Shinto rite in January. A lovely, large format design, beautifully detailed with embossed woodgrain on the lute.
