Echigo, Snow in Niigata, Ayume and Takane, No. 35 - Terrific print of Jiraiya (Young Thunder) and his group of bandits attacking a palace in Echigo Province in a scene from the kabuki play called "The Story of Young Thunder Hero." He drags a young beauty from the verandah as he looks back over his shoulder, his head swathed in white cloth to conceal his identity. In the snowy courtyard his men carry off a palanquin, and a large snow toad sits at left with smoke rising from its mouth, a reference to the toads who taught Jiraiya magic. The inset above shows Jiraiya with four toads at the corners of the inset, a reference to his ability to practice toad magic. A dramatic scene from this fascinating tale.
