Magician and Archer in Wolf Skin - Incredible Chikanobu triptych of three samurai crossing a braided rope bridge over a chasm in a scene from "Jiraiya Monogatari," a folktale about a young hero named Jiraiya who practices toad magic. In the center, the warrior Takasago Yuminosuke wears a wolf skin over his armor. He grips a flaming torch between his teeth and carries a bow. At left, Jiraiya wears an impressive dragon print robe and carries a gun. He shields his face with his sleeve to avoid the squabbling of the other two men as Yasha Goro prepares to draw his sword at right. An absolutely fantastic scene with the softly shaded night sky adding an atmospheric touch. Beautifully detailed with fine line work, and burnishing on the black robe. A great illustration from this popular legend.
