Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Genji outside a Beauty's Window, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Charming triptych from the famous Tale of Genji depicting the young nobleman standing in a courtyard outside a beauty's window. She peers out from between a wooden grate, her young attendant beside her, smiling at the handsome prince. Genji returns her gaze with a happy smile, casually resting one elbow on a plank covering a large water basin with smaller pails stacked atop it. A sword bearer kneels nearby, carefully holding his weapon upright, wrapped in purple cloth. A blossoming cherry tree frames the scene beautifully. A lovely subject with attractive color and fine detail in the elegant kimono fabrics.
