Matano Goro Kagehisa and Sanada Yoichi Yoshitada, 1897 - Terrific design of the young warrior Matano Goro Kagehisa battling Sanada Yoichi Yoshitada on a rocky outcropping above the sea. Crouching atop his prostrate enemy, Kagehisa grips Yoshitada's helmet, a fierce expression on his face. He wears a billowing white cloak over his armor that identifies him as a messenger or important person. At right, another samurai approaches from behind the cliff with his sword drawn. Rains slants across the night sky and white-capped waves crash against the shore. A fantastic design, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the black areas of the armor, the scabbards, the bow, and the black fur shoe. A great, atmospheric image.
